Ravi Varma Lithograph

Printed in Germany in the 1940s. Depiction of the young Mysore Maharaja Jaya Chamarajendra Wodyer.
Ravi Varma was a prince from a small province of Kerala who became a famous painter in the 19th century. He was known for his portraits and religious subjects that fused European techniques with Indian traditions. As his original paintings were not affordable to many, he decided to make prints first abroad and then imported a lithograph machine from Germany to produce prints at the Ravi Varma Press. This oleograph is a polychrome lithograph, where the different colours are each carved on separate stones and then placed one by one into the press.
